Union Hall, Ireland : “A Whale of a Time” art exhibition

     Art exhibition “A Whale of a Time” at Cnoc Buí gallery, Union Hall, Co Cork in Ireland, is a story of whales, wolves and other characters straight out of the imagination of Nathalie Vessié. The universe of the Belgian artist is told through her paintings, her papier-mâché sculptures, her illustrations and her books.

     For almost 20 years, Nathalie taught drawing in Tournai, Belgium. Moving to Ireland in 2018, it is in the magnificent countryside of West Cork, at the edge of the ocean, one of her main sources of inspiration, that she is installed today with her husband, their two cats and two dogs.

     The whale is the main motivation of Nathalie Vessié’s paintings in this exhibition. Under her brush, this fabulous mammal becomes a sheep, a pigeon, a jellyfish, a beetle… or it even becomes the Poulgorm bridge at Union Hall. You may see that it is possible to be ‘Riding a Dragon Whale’ or to be ‘Walking a Whale on a Crisp Morning’.

     Cnoc Buí is a significant property on the edge of the village of Unionhall in West Cork. It comprises a traditional late 19th century two-storey farmhouse, five 18th century outbuildings (currently derelict) and grounds with extensive road frontage. Cnoc Buí is currently being converted to a community arts centre that will promote the visual, performing and dramatic arts locally, regionally and nationally.

     Union Hall is a picturesque fishing town in West Cork, located on the west side of Glandore Harbour, between Castletownshend and Glandore. A huge white church, a sort of gateway to Union Hall, dominates the entrance to town. The summertime streets are crowded with kids and bicycles, their parents walking after them. It seems like a quiet, family place. There are loads of hidden, archaeological pockets to explore around here. Lots of pretty place along the water; this is a good place to check out by car.
